About the Artist:
A Self-Taught Visionary. Born in Greenwood, South Dakota, Joseph Chamberlain was a proud, enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe (Ihanktonwan Dakota). Growing up near Lake Andes, his artistic journey was entirely self-driven. As a completely self-taught artist, he mastered the fine details of storytelling using watercolor, acrylics, pen and ink, and colored pencils. Chamberlain’s canvas extended far beyond standard paper. Over his multi-faceted career, he painted custom murals, drafted clothing designs, illustrated books (such as How Not to Catch Fish), and even designed a custom Pendleton blanket titled "Not Alone". His artwork earned him prominent regional acclaim, sweeping major categories at the Red Earth Festival in 2006, including the People’s Choice Award, Storyteller Award, and Judge’s Award.
Art as Healing: A Legacy of Well-Being.
What made Joe truly remarkable was how seamlessly his creative gifts intertwined with his advocacy work. In addition to being a celebrated visual artist, he was a dedicated Recovery Coach and motivational speaker. He utilized his personal journey and creative practice to promote sobriety, mental health, and spiritual well-being throughout Native communities. To Chamberlain, painting was more than just a visual medium—it was a form of medicine and historical preservation. Every dynamic horse, buffalo, and ceremonial dance he captured served to uplift the viewer and honor the ancestral lineage of the Ihanktonwan Dakota. Though he passed away peacefully in August 2022, the vibrant energy of his artwork continues to heal and inspire. Carrying the Narrative Forward. Through this collection, his timeless stories transition from gallery walls to a personal, shareable format. This collaboration allows collectors and loved ones to send a beautiful piece of genuine Dakota heritage across the miles.
